Adverts about not using books in class

Hey, this is Juan again and I have just finished editing our videos about not using books in classes but there is a little bit problem, my internet speed is so low and sign is very poor and therefore it cannot upload videos to YouTube right now. Tomorrow I will upload our adverts when I was at the university because Faculty’s internet works very well. Meanwhile, you can listen to the theme I have composed exclusively to this adverts, it is only played by piano and orchestra, it is quite simple but I have not any free time to make better things. I knew I could choose Creative Commons music but all music I listened to it did not fit with which I wanted so I decided to compose it.

I hope you will like it, enjoy it!

Cheers, Juan ;)

A morning with Manel Rives

The 5th of March SOyER group had an unusual guest in its classroom. He was the great teacher Manel Rives who came to the University of Murcia, concretely the Faculty of Education, in order to make a workshop with us. But, before explaining Manel’s method and all tasks we had the opportunity to carry out we should introduce who Manel Rives is.
Having a look at Manel’s twitter we have a short description about Manel’s job.

He is a teacher who incorporates new technologies to educative area. First of all, we use to think if new technologies improve children’s knowledge; in reference to this point, according to Manel’s words:

“It is only another way to make things, I have found new technologies a better method to lead my pupils’ work but other teachers will think I am a bit crazy making projects with technology and not with books, it only depends on the manner you want to impart your lecture.”

And it is true, Manel’s children are not guided by a text book, this kind of classes conceive text books as an alternative choice which it is only used to look for information and comparing different sources. Manel’s methodology is based in Learning by projects and it is in these tasks where technology is incorporated. When we think about this type of teaching we use to consider projects as boring assignments which are not completely read by ourselves and they are just made for the sake of submitting one. However, with Manel things seem to be quite different; children are motivated every time and they pay a lot of attention to their work putting all effort which is possible. In regard to this point, why are Manel’s children so encouraged? And, on the contrary, why are children with common learning methodologies less stimulated? We could say one of the main factors is technology. Technology is the most powerful instrument of the world but, at the same time, it is one of the easiest elements to control (basic control, not professional or expert on controlling) and, in fact, give a computer game to a child, wait for some days and then let me know if he or she has just finished the whole game without necessity to read instructions, I am pretty sure he or she will have completed all the game. Consequently, if we extrapolate this revolutionary behavior to the rest of technological device we could have an idea about how children manage technology and they have a sixth sense to run these new tools.
In this way, what are those Manel’s projects which combine knowledge and new technologies? As Manel said, there is not an only program for making all this kind of tasks but these entire programs software share an only device to make them possible: IPad. I think IPad does not need any presentation when tons of people have ever used one or even they used it daily to work with.
Next we are going to introduce three main tools which Manel uses with children and the example of each one we made in class (please think that day we were two in Broken Dreams group so I joined to Hakunamatateros group, thanks also to them for the good company, as a result of this, Toontastic and Comic examples are the same because they were made by them and me).

Toontastic
Toontastic inspires the artist and writer in every child while teaching key storytelling principles that help to promote Creativity at a young age. Toontastic’s drawing tools bring kids’ wildest ideas to life alongside virtual play sets chock full of pirates, princesses, far away galaxies, and many other characters and settings to spark the imagination. Cartoons can be shared online via ToonTube, Toontastic’s Global Storytelling Network, to help children connect to friends and family and learn about other cultures, customs, and lifestyles through stories created by their peers around the world. (from Toontastic webpage)
Here is our example about Toontastic. The plot is just ridiculous but we were tired of racking our brains and we admitted that was not a pedagogical story to tell to children. Please click in the next link to watch the story.

Strip Designer

Be creative on the go. With Strip Designer you can create your own personal comic strip right on your iPhone or iPad. Add photos from you photo album or draw your own sketches. Apply simple image filters to increase the impact of photos, and add speech balloons and text-boxes. (description from Strip Designer’s manufacturer)

But, what advantages can produce a comic compared to reading a text book? We have thought about this important question and we have summarized some reasons which evidence comics’ benefit. Here are some examples:

-          Comic is easy to manipulate.
-          It is not so expensive.
-          Comic gets grabbing children’s attention.
-          It is out of traditional tasks.
-          It develops the creativity.
-          Comic makes learning as significant.
-          It creates reading habits.
-          It makes easier communicative actions and reading comprehension.
-          It fosters children’s logical thinking.
-          Comic can be adapted to every level and subject.
-          It may help to perform better at reading and writing difficulties.
-          Comics can be used as an introduction to books.

In addition, I should point out Strip Designer was very easy to use and I am pretty sure all children can quickly adapt to these new tools due to the exposed advantages and also because of attraction which Technology grabs generally in children. On the other hand, if I had to make reference to some disadvantage I think it would be to use the IPad’s touch screen since sometimes it is difficult to type fast and it may have some difficulties when you try to fit bubbles in little places.
Here is the comic example which I made with Hakuna Matateros group. The story line is quite simple but sometimes it has to be straightforward because making complex plots may take a lot of time and that morning we only had an hour for creating a comic and a Toontastic story.

Stop Motion

What is Stop Motion?
Stop motion is an animation technique to make a physically manipulated object appear to move on its own. The object is moved in small increments between individually photographed frames, creating the illusion of movement when the series of frames is played as a continuous sequence.
Stop motion’s didactic possibilities are very wide but we could emphasize this technic allows to children to develop their creativity as well as incrementing teamwork and promoting plastic and audiovisuals features.
Broken Dreams’ Stop motion about dinosaurs has already posted in Pensamiento Ajeno Blog so if you have not seen our creation please go below and enjoy it ;-)

Reflection about Manel’s visit and methodology

First of all, sorry but I have to say it: Manel rocks!! Manel is such a great teacher and if I were one of their students I would be very happy because there is not a huge amount of teachers like him.
Once I have said this I will be more serious and I will explain my thoughts about his workshop. I think Manel is out of the typical world where teachers are nobody without books and he wants to go beyond discovering new limits about teaching and learning and, from my point of view, this is something I really like because it proves how teacher job is not a static activity as many people consider it is.
Learning by projects is a good option to educate children and also, if we link this one to new technologies we could obtain a powerful relationship thanks to which Manel may have found the key to enter in a new teaching concept which, moreover, is partly based in TPCK foundations since besides of using Technology it mixes Content and Pedagogy.
This way to impart lectures gets other elements which normal lectures cannot get with the same quality, that is, we are dealing with elements as motivation, initiative, interest, enthusiasm, inspiration, creativity, stimulus…lot of feelings which may produce significant learning since, memorizing a paragraph can be done with or without a good teacher but, making that paragraph as a part of our knowledge is more difficult and in this point good teachers, methodology and good environment take an important role.
On the other hand, in reference to workshop which Manel made I have to admit I did not have any idea about what presentation was going to be about…yes, I knew dinosaurs were going to be one of the morning main characters and, the day before, Linda also told us he used to work with Stop motion and other tools so I have to say I knew something about him, but not too much and due to this reason the whole four hours passed very fast.
Unfortunately there was not a lot of time and therefore, we had to make activities quickly and if it is the first time you use an IPad I beat the task may be so long because we are not used to type on big touch screens and in addition, we are not also familiarized with those software programs so, first of all it was discovering how to start controlling the tool. However, we got interested in using IPad and its programs and we could prove how tasks which are made by pencil and paper may result very boring and, on the contrary, utilizing technological devices make more interesting jobs and, in fact, if we sat open-mouthed the whole class, how could children not be motivated to make activities all the time?
We could be talking about Manel for long hours but if we wanted summarize that morning in one sentence I think it could be something like:

“Making knowledge as significant through innovation”

As US people often say in other contexts, Manel, you are THE MAN of resourceful teaching concept and new technologies; I like your way to impart lectures but I am not sure of saying: I want to be with you in the future, I am in the first grade of my degree, I want to know other teachers and methodology before consider what it is the best for me but, right now, I beat you are one of my choices for being as you in the far future.

Finally, here is my photo with Manel and Hakuna Matateros group, what a great time we had that day!

That is all; see you in the next post.

                                                                                                                                                        Cheers,
Juan ;-)

Video: the classic innovative media

Hi, I’m Cristina and this time I am going to summarize what Friday 9 March was about since as Linda said the star of each group had to make a little report about the topic.

Everyone can choose what they want to see in every moment of your life for fun, because there is much variety to choose from.
With advances in technology, we could get to see what we want in any place where we are.
New technologies can be used worldwide. In the field of education the teacher can support their education in technology, but it can never be used alone to teach.
Many teachers make the mistake of using the videos as a remedy for not having to teach, but the methods they use are outdated, do not know how to use the technologies, the videos are too long and incomprehensible to children, teachers choose when, where and what children have to watch.
Other mistakes made by teachers is that some believe that not all subjects may come to use technology and above all, a video does not replace a teacher, but also helps students better understand the teacher.
Internet for children and teachers can find information and videos to supplement their study and teaching and to further develop their knowledge.

See you soon, Cristina

Analyst from 19 to 23

Hello all people, I'm Cristina, the analyst of this week.

When I finish it, Juan and me we will have finished updating the blog, I'm sorry because we could do it before.

So, this week, we have done an oral presentation in laptop "The Beatles and Beatlemania" which is pur work of Pechacucha.

When we were recording it, we had a problem because Pechacucha is a presentation where people who were presenter were Paloma and me, but we had problems because we had to delete some slices and all our work changed.

In the other hand, when Juan and me were recording it, we had a good time but we had to stop the recording in a few times, but I think that we did a good work.

This week Juan and me have done an excellent work because we recorded the Pechacucha presentation and we did all the post in the blog.

Juan and me are working so hard in this subject, I think that we are doing it very well.

So, see you next week
Cristina

Analyst from 12 to 16

Hello, I'm Cristina, the analyst of this week.

What happened this week?

Well, it happened a lo of things because Adriana and Paloma have dropped out the degree, so our grop is compossed by Juan and me.

This week Juan and me have worked very good because we have divided all the work and we did it.

Juan has worked very well because when we had the stop motion, I don't understood it and he explained it to me and did it because I had PET.

I think that we did a good team.

 See you, Cristina.

The Beatles Pechakucha

Hi there, this is Juan again and this time I am going to show you our Pechakucha about The Beatles. We are actualizing the whole blog so please do not be stunned if you see old posts like this being published now. I think Pechakucha does not need any presentation, all the information is included in the own video and, therefore, thank you very much for spending your time watching it.

P.S.: There is one mistake at 1:40 minute, I said Technological Content but it is wrong, I wanted to say Technological Knowledge but I do not know how I finished saying another thing, please sorry for that silly error.
P.S.S.: We are aware of the video’s bad quality. As you know, YouTube compresses videos so much and, consequently, the result is poor resolution and terrible sound. I think if you try to watch the video in 480p with full screen mode it seems quality improves a little, but no so much.
I hope you will like it, Enjoy it!
                                                                                                                Cheers,
Juan, from Broken Dreams ;-)

Dinosaurs Stop Motion

Hey, Juan here from Broken Dreams introducing our Dinosaurs Stop Motion. The short is called “Love at first sight” and I think title describes all movie contents very well. I have to admit the video is very basic and photos were taken with an old camera so this is the reason because of there are some blurred images and interruptions when characters carry out their movements. On the other hand, due to there is no conversation throughout the video we decided to make a kind of “film-style” and, consequently, as we can see at the beginning, after the titles and the presentation, we have put a member cast in which dinosaurs' main features are explained since we do not have to forget the video must include educative contents.
Making a Stop Motion has been a great experience, I had made some Stop Motions before but they were very brief because I got bored rapidly when I had taken one or two hundred photos but this time I have been more patient and I got taking all photos without any problems. I think it is a good method to bring new knowledge to children in a technological way.

I hope you will enjoy it as we have enjoyed making it.

P.S.: Ah! Do not forget to read credits; our recording partners had funny names! ;-)
P.P.S.: I highly recommend going to YouTube and watching the video in 1080p High Definition. Here you have the direct link: Dinosaurs Stop Motion - Love at First Sight

All the best,
Juan

New (old) updates: Journalist and Analyst

Hi this is Juan and I am going to start actualizing BD’s blog. Dates are so old but please think I have had to write these two entries now because they were assigned to other ex-members.

From Monday 20 to Sunday 26 February

Hi, Juan here from Broken Dreams and this week I have been the journalist of my group. First of all, I have to say this week have been so quiet compared to TPCK week. Monday 20 was about an explanation about Curriculum implementation and, in this point, I have to admit that I thought Linda would entrust some task which would be due by Friday 24. However, the big “surprise” would come true on Friday when Linda named the Pechakucha word. Therefore, we could say that the real weekly work about the subject started on Friday because of the assigned job. However, it seems that people from my group do not worry about carrying out tasks and (I am always who has to be remembering works we have to make and wondering about correcting English from all members, trying to make the best as possible…) I decided not to say nothing about the work because I was hoping someone would say something like: Hey, when are we going to meet in order to start the task? But it was incredible, weekend ended and neither of them said nothing or sent a message about The Beatles Pechakucha.
I was a bit tired of being “behind people” saying what we are going to make every week and, consequently, I started to make Pechakucha in my own way. Next week I was not the star but I had very clear that if nobody helped me to make the task I would not have any problem presenting the exposition.
To conclude, as I have said, this week I have been the journalist of my group and I have no qualms about saying that week from Monday 20 to Sunday 26 was absolutely holidays for the most part of group’s members. I like to be truthful and sorry but I had to express some of my thoughts, despite I have not been analyst this week I was a bit exhausted of this behaviour and I think this is not the correct way if we want to give of our best. I hope members of Broken Dreams will be aware of the situation because this is not a game, we are not in primary school and I really dislike when you try to make the best as possible in order to improve the group’s level and you do not receive the same feedback from the rest of members. As far I am concerned, it is true that I am not perfect, in fact, I admit I have a lot of mistakes every day, I do not want to say with this words that I am the best of group or something like that, I only want to say that, sometimes, I feel I am the only one who wonders about activities and several times, I have finished making tasks in my own way for the rest of the group because I feel I cannot completely trust in my work partners’ labour.
I want to think this is only a spell of bad luck and as soon as possible we will be a cooperative where we will be together in the same boat and we will take into account that university is not only a continued party where we go in order to spend our time.

From Monday 25 February to Sunday 4 March

Hi, Juan again from Broken Dreams and this week I have been the analyst of my group. Next I am going to reply questions’ analyst but before I want to make an introduction about how the week was. First of all, I will name this week as Pechakucha’s week. Pechakucha’s week has been a bit weird. I carried out making the presentation’s draft and finally the rest of members decided to start worrying about the task. However, there was a point which amazed me a lot and it was that two members of the group began making Pechakucha’s labour without saying anything to the rest of people because they wanted to surprise us. What was the result? They spent their time making the same part of the topic which I had said it would be made by me. Consequently, this lack of communication would cause more delay to our project. Pechakucha’s week went by and definitively it seemed that all people knew about the task and the shared work. As a result of this late organization work was finished on Thursday morning and it only lacked to make a good design which would be created by me and it would take me all-night in order to get an attractive presentation. At the end, I finished the design so late but it was obvious, the day before I was still waiting for the assigned task from each group’s member and, consequently, I had only one afternoon to make design, to correct the whole work, to revise English… but this is not important to me, what it really amazes me it is the fact I cannot understand why stars did not defend our presentation in a correct way. Task (except design) was already made with 24 hours in advance, I absolutely accept that it would be great to have more time but I think ten slides can be studied and learned in one day and even more if you cannot spend more than twenty seconds in each slide; why cannot you prepare a 3’20’’long’s presentation in one day? You only had to say two coherent phrases per slide.
As I have said in other moments, I am not perfect; I have a lot of mistakes every day, I am aware of my English is not enough good and I recognize I am person who is so far from perfection in all senses but when I involve in an activity I like to make it the best as possible and I try to give it all one has got in order to get suitable results. Even I said: “Please, study slides, the presentation is so cool but without good oral exposition it will be very poor”. I do not if nerves were responsible for the performance, if it was lack of study about the topic but from bottom view a little failure was what partners and I contemplated.
I hope that it is only a temporary oversight and we will get our daily labour back because this is not correct work way if we want to obtain good results collectively. Despite my of view from the group and week I think is enough clear I will be so brief answering questions because we should remember this is not a colombian novel but a blog’s post ;)

What was the best part of the activity?

I think the best part of the activity was the opportunity of extrapolating The Beatles and The Beatlemania to two main perspectives: TPCK and Curriculum Implementation. In this way, we do not only learn theoretical concepts but we study how they are put into practice thanks to the topics application, in the case that we are dealing with, The Beatles and The Beatlemania. In addition, we have learnt that teaching children may be more than reading or listening Beatles’ songs; some software tools as Wix, Blogger and Voki allow us to transmit knowledge to children in a different and also interactive way.

What was the worse?

We could say the worse part of the activity is the beginning because it is the point where you do not know how to raise the matter and, in the current case, how to join The Beatles to TPCK and Curriculum Implementation’s perspectives. I have to admit it is not easy to make directly the presentation, before you have to summarize your ideas and being aware of your limit, in the case in question, temporary and numerical limit; 6’ 40’’ and 20 slides per presentation. Therefore, if I had to choose the worse part of the activity I think difficulties of Pechakucha’s work are the main drawback because every moment we do not have to forget we are playing with conditions which will determine a specific kind of presentation so different compared to presentations without any maximum time and space.

What was the best moment of the week (in the work of the group)? And what was the worse?

Obviously, the best moment of the week was on Thursday when we finished Pechakucha task. However, I could refer to the elaboration process as another of the best week’s moments because it includes challenging steps as creating slides, what information we include, designing presentation… these are some of stages which I personally like and I describe as these ones which take part of the best week’s moments.
On the other hand, the worse moment of the week was, with any doubt, first days after Linda entrusted us Pechakucha task because, as I have explained, people were not worried about work, I was sick of remember our homework to them so I decided to start the activity in my own since, as I supposed and finally I noticed, nobody told nothing about the assignment during the weekend.

What have you learnt?

I do not know what my work partners have learnt but I am pretty sure I have learnt a lot new concepts, experiences and new TPCK and C.I. perspective from this activity. First of all, I say I have learnt a lot of concepts because before Pechakucha task I had a look at TPCK and Curriculum Implementation notes and yes, I understood them but I had no example about the most part of concepts so this activity have helped to illustrate these notions thanks to the topic’s application (The Beatles in the present case). Next, I have said I have learnt a lot of experiences; again, yes, experiences as being aware of the work, being responsible, being behind people in order to make presentation and exposition and then, lot of experiences related to the work, in example, at the beginning I did not know what Wix was and, therefore, I had no idea about how using that difficult tool but after getting in touch with the software program I have discovered a new device which it seems to be so easy to use and, as a result of its interactivity, children will be able to learn due to new ways.

What do you need to conserve -as a group- for the next weeks?

In my opinion Broken Dreams have to change its way of thinking. We should not behave as procrastinators, we must be aware these tasks will be assessed and, therefore, we must not leave our fate to the chance.

What do you need to improve –as a group- for the next weeks?

First of all, we need organization. We will not get any purpose without established patterns. Next, we will need responsibility and initiative, each member of the group should try to contribute ideas and being aware the group’s system; cooperativity, collaboration and interdependence among us. Finally, grouped member’s connection appears as an important point since a lack of communication among partners may propitiate cooperative and collaborated work without any sense.

                                                                                                               Cheers,

Juan ;-)

Pensamiento Ajeno is...BACK!

Hey, what’s up? A long time has passed since we last actualized Broken Dreams’ blog. First of all: sorry, we had many sudden problems about some group’s member and definitively BD will be only constituted by two work-partners: Cristina and Juan. Consequently, due to these changes we have been working in order to write all posts which our ex-members had to write (please, think there is two roles per member every week, and as result, we have double work from now on). In reference to this point we have to admit we had the option to join to other groups but we decided to be self-confidence and to give the last opportunity in order to emerge our almost sunken boat.

                                                                                                                                  Cheers,

Problem

I have seen what Linda has said and I'm going to answer her.

We have a problem because Adriana and Paloma have left the degree and Juan and me (Cristina) haven't got any idea that we can do.
So, this Friday we will going to speak about this with you. We are alone, it's a problem.

See you, Cristina

HOW HAVE WE WORKED THIS WEEK?

This week we have had two beginners: Cristina and Paloma. We divided the work in two parts:
Juan and Cristina have made the first part of the work. It was about the relationship between The Beatles and the beatlemania and the TPCK theory.
Paloma and I have made the second part. It was about the relationship between The Beatles and beatlemania and the curriculum implantation.

Each little group has done slides of their topic and all of us have sent our part in PowerPoint to Juan. He has corrected it and has made a good presentation in PowerPoint.
Finally, we have met and each little group has explained their part of work and when we have learnt all the work, we have prepared the oral exposition.
Personally, I hope that the exposition it will be successful because we have worked a lot this week.

Written by: Adriana Guillén Martinez.

Last week role: Star.

My role last week was to be a Star and to show a pechakucha about ``The Beatles and The Beatlemania´´ with my colleague Cristina .

But ``what is pechakucha ?´´ you may wonder it, well honestly I didn't know that before linda's explanation on the 26th Friday of February but now I can try to sum up for you; a pechakucha is a kind of oral presentation in which there are many fixed features:

1- Number of slides: exactly 20 slides.

2- Time per slide: 20 second each slide.

3- Number of speakers: in this presentation, two speakers.

4- Intercalary speakers' times to talk about their specific slides.

From my point I have found some difficulties that can be solved in a future pechakucha. First, when I explained my slides of ``The Beatles and The Beatlemania´´ pechakucha the day of the presentation I had more than 20 slides and for this reason it was a bit confused to talk about slides that I could not prepare in a proper way and second, many slides had not the correct time and due to this fact I could not talk in the accurate time assigned to each slide.

Finally I like the theoretical part of the pechakucha becuase I have discovered the importance of TPCK and Curriculum Implementation' theories in a educational work .

See you ,

Paloma Mª

Monday 27th February

Hello, I am Adriana Guillén and I will describe the class of the last monday 27th of February 2012.

We learnt to make expositions. The teacher told us how we must present in public a work, that says, how do an exposition. She explained how use the powerpoint for an oral explanation because next Friday, some class members will explain to the rest a particular topic and she wants that we learnt how do it.

I think that main ideas that she wanted transmit us were:

a) Technological aids like for example the power point should be a support for the transmitter but it shoud not handle the exposition.

b) The powerpoint must have a principal idea. For the next work she asked us to express one idea for slide.

c) The powerpoint musn`t contain much information, is important that it have a simple concepts.

d) Must have a relationship between the message spoken by transmitter and slide of powerpoint. In this way, the issuer will achieve his receptors to pay attention to his explanation.

e) The exposition must be concrete and simple, but no simplistic. A good students will know the difference between simple and simplistic and he may explain the basic concept of each slide in a simple way.

To conclude, we have learnt that one exhibitor must study deeply his item if he wants that the public understand him. Moreover, he must think that the public don’t know nothing about that study he will expose. For this reason, he will explain the principal ideas.

See you!!
